Walk or bike to Duke. Or four blocks away, take the free Duke H1 bus to the Medical Center campus. From there, it's a short walk to the West Campus Main Quad. We're also four blocks from the huge Harris Teeter grocery. Whole Foods, with lots of organic fruit and vegetables, is just a bit farther.
Also within walking distance: 25 restaurants and nine coffee shops. Enjoy all that the Ninth St. shopping area has to offer (Durham's "Greenwich Village," says the Herald-Sun newspaper).
The well-maintained apartment has a private entrance through a private screened porch (a wonderful place to relax when the weather is mild). Ceiling fans, the 10-foot ceilings and large windows give the place a Southern ambiance
The apartment has about everything you could want -- comfortable bed, linens, comforters, new towels, cookware, dishes, eating utensils, Chemex pour-over coffeemaker, microwave, toaster oven, hot water kettle, hair dryer, HD television, "compact kitchen," two refrigerators, two-person eating area, easy chair, desk with office chair, and radio. An iron and ironing board are available on the back porch.
The "compact kitchen" (see photos) features two electric burners, a small refrigerator and a sink with hot and cold water. In the hallway, you'll find a larger, apartment-size refrigerator with freezer, and an old-fashioned wardrobe for your clothes (with room for your luggage on top). The apartment has two closets and spacious storage cabinets over the front door. No matter how many books you have, you'll probably not fill the two tall bookcases.
Take advantage of our high-speed wifi (a $100 value). When we say "high-speed," we really mean it. A typical speed in the apartment is around 400 Mbps. Enjoy any of several streaming services (a $70 value). We have Spectrum (including the major networks, ESPN, ESPN2, Weather Channel, Bravo, AMC), Netflix, Prime Video, Paramount+, Peacock, Disney+ and Marquee (classical music, dance, opera, ballet, theater). You'll have access to a "smart" LG washer and dryer on site. "Smart" in this case means you can check your phone to see when your wash or drying cycle will be finished; you don't have to guess.
The apartment has a 2nd generation Ring security system, monitored 24/7 by Ring. In addition to the usual door and window sensors, the security system includes glass breakage sensors and a panic button beside the bed. This is a corner house, decreasing the chance of a break-in.
We (Heidrun and Bill Erwin) live in another part of the house and are home most of the time. So we can respond promptly if you need something. For extra security, we change the locks after each tenant. All this attention to security doesn't mean our neighborhood is unsafe. On the contrary, we've always felt safe here. The streets are well-lit at night; its not unusual to see neighbors walking their dogs after dark.
Our Old West Durham neighborhood reminds many people of the "good old days." It's welcoming and refreshingly diverse. In Old West Durham, you'll get a smile and a hello from most of the people you pass on your walks. (WalkScore.com gives the Old West Durham neighborhood a very walkable score of 72.) Englewood Ave. has sidewalks on both sides of the street. The neighborhood is popular with joggers and dog-walkers.
We've rented our studio apartments for decades to satisfied visiting scholars, grad students, med students, researchers, dancers and choreographers. We understand the stresses and demands you face. If you choose our studio at 2041 Englewood, we will strive to make your stay as carefree as possible. When it's time to move on, we want you to have fond memories of your time in Durham. And we'll do everything in our power to make it so.
